The poor weather on Saturday did not dampen the spirits of the two under ten premiership teams, Clane united v Kilcullen AFC. It was the first time both teams played against each other this season and the spectators were in for a very exciting game.
Clane started very well and had several chances earlier on, the best of which was a break from the middlefield, Sean Hannon passed to Alex Power who rounded the central defender and then his shot was deflected narrowly wide.
The resulting corner lead to the first goal, Kilcullen headed the ball out of the square but it was retrieved by Gareth Cleary who passed to Martin Callan. He teed the ball up perfectly for Sean Hannon who buried the ball into the roof of the net.
Kilcullen came back fighting with some great attacking play by Martin Sully in Middlefield. Calum Surke , Kilcullen had several attempts at goal but the Clane goalie, Daniel Reilly, was in flying form and made several good saves. Clane backs were now under fierce pressure with Cameron McCarthy having a great game and Gavin Dowling in middlefield was breaking up several of the Kilcullen attacks. Clane also had a number of chances, Alex Power center forward was a real handful for the Kilcullen defence. He was fouled just outside the box and took the free kick, Martin Callan latched onto the cross and his shoot was cleared off the line and deflected wide. From the corner Clane scored the second goal. Again it was cleared by Kilcullen but Gareth Cleary was waiting outside the box, went past two players and slotted the ball into the top right corner of the net. 2-0 to Clane and the half whistle blew.
In the second half Clane went on the attack again, Padraig Lally was moved into middlefield and Clane were dominant in this area of the pitch. Clane had several really good chances, Alex Power was slotted through by Sean Hannon down the right and Alex riffled across the face of the goals. Clane had another great chance minutes later when a long kickout by Daniel Reilly was flicked on by Alex Power and Martin Callan latched onto the ball and his shoot flashed past the upright. Clane pilled on the pressure and finally broke down the Kilcullen defense with a well worked goal. Padraig broke down a Kilcullen attach, passed the ball to Alex Power in Midfield, he released the ball for Sean Hannon down the right, he ran to the byline and crossed the ball into the box for Martin Callan to volley home.
Kilcullen pressed hard for a goal and their efforts were awarded with a great counter attach from Eoghan Gainer, his shoot was parred away by Clane goalie but Harry Swan was there to direct the ball into the empty net. Clane now were under severe pressure as Kilcullen rallied for a late finish but they were unable to breakdown the Clane defense and the game finished 3 – 1 for Clane.
Man of the Match was a difficult choice as all players played extremely well, but this award goes to the away team and their central defender Ruben Parker who had an outstanding game and one to watch out for in the future.
