Under 8's sink Kynog with seven goals.
October 25th '09

Under 8
Clane United 7 Kynog 0

The day was breezy but the rain held off for this entertaining game.

Both teams played excellent football in the first period. Clane went closest to scoring with Adam Quinn testing the Kynog defence on a few occasions and the Kynog keeper putting on a super show to keep out the Clane attack with some excellent saves.

In the second period both teams were cancelling out each other until Liam Wright provided a bit trickery to outwit the Kynog the defence and score the opening goal.

In the Third period Clane continued to put pressure on the Kynog defence. Clanes Colm Brien tormented the Kynog defence in the third period and was rewarded with two goal the first one was after a super move which involved 5 Clane players and the second was after some hard work out on the left and a fortunate deflection to leave Clane 3up.

In the fourth period Clane’s Adam Quinn showed off some of his finishing skills by scoring four goals. His first was a beautiful lob over the Kynog defence and keeper.

His second was from a goalmouth scramble where he got his toe on the end of a corner. His third was after some good work by Liam Wright on the right , Liam’s shot  hit the bar and Adam was there to help the ball over the line.

His fourth was after capitalising on the keeper spilling a shot Liam Wright and converting it at the second attempt.

Leinster Junior Shield
Clane United 5 Dundrum 3

Clane United played host to Leinster Senior League side Dundrum Athletic in the second round of the Leinster Junior Shield in Clane. After the long trip to Wexford in the previous round Clane were more than happy to have a home fixture for this tie with Dundrum.

Showing no signs of a hangover from last weeks victory in the ROI supports cup final Clane started the strongest and managed to go one up within the first five minutes. After a series of four corners Jordon Pedreschi got his head onto the end of a well struck Alex McCann corner leaving Derek Smith in the Dundrum goal with no chance of getting a hand to it. The game was played in very blustery conditions and this had an influence through the game. All of the early attempts from Dundrum were courtesy of long balls with strong winds behind them. Mid way through the first half Dundrum were awarded a free kick twenty five yards out from the Clane goal Paul Gordon caught everyone off guard and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner of the Clane goal to pull it level at one all. Clane added their second again from an Alex McCann corner but this time Ray Kelly got onto it and powered the ball home to make it two one. Dundrum continued to come back at Clane for the remainder of the first half but Sean Darcey and Gary Hunt in the centre of the Clane defence remained solid throughout.

The second half started with Clane having the massive advantage of the strong wind at their back at this point they began to take control of the tie. The Clane midfield of Rob Delaney Jason, Acton, Ray Kelly and Alex McCann continuously caused problems for Tom O Malley and Keith Brennan in the Dundrum defence as they created endless chances while Rob Newman up front was unlucky not to get on the score sheet.

Clane’s third came from a bicycle kick just inside the Dundrum half by Rod Delaney that took a bounce in the box and was helped over the keeper who was off his line by Rob Sharpe. Minutes later Clane were awarded a fee just outside the Dundrum box Alex McCann stepped up and drilled a low ball into the packed box, Gary Hunt was first to get a foot to it and he managed to guide the ball into the net for Clanes fourth of the game.

In wet, windy, miserable conditions, with only twenty minutes left on the clock and a three goal lead Clane could not have been blamed for thinking the game was pretty much over as a contest but someone forgot to tell the visitors and the managed to pull two back in quick reply the first from a break out after a Clane corner and the second directly from a free kick leaving the tie still open with five minutes left on the clock.

The final goal for Clane came from a the ever prolific Jordon Pedreschi his second of the game and the final nail in the coffin for the visitors. A through ball from man of the match Rob Dealney found Pedreschi on the end line with only the keeper to beat which he did to great effect.

Best for Clane Rob Delaney, Jordon Pedreschi, Alex McCann.

Close game see Clane United U10's snatch the away victory.

Under 10 Premier
Newbridge Town 2 Clane United 3

A windy and blustery day in Newbridge saw the clash between Clane united premier team and Newbridge town.  The game was played in an enclosed Astropark pitch which enabled the game to proceed, considering the difficult conditions and it turned out to be a close, well contested and exciting game.

Clane had the wind in the first half and the long kickout’s by Daniel Reilly posed a difficult challenge for the Newbridge  defense.  A hand ball incident led to the first goal when Clane were awarded the free kick just outside the box. A cleverly worked free kick from Jack Wright who whipped the ball into the box and Martin Callen got his head to the ball and helped it into the back of the net. Newbridge struck back with a long kickout into the Clane box and Warren Sherlock profited from some confusion in the Clane defense and hit a looping header over the out-rushing  keeper into the net.  This was turning out to be a great game, both teams were fighting hard in middlefield and there were some lovely exchanges of passing and movement down both wings. Clane came very close with a point blank header from Martin Callen saved on the line by the Newbridge goalie.

Newbridge pressed hard and was putting the Clane goalie Daniel Reilly under severe pressure, He saved several shots and managed to get a hand to a corner shot which looked destined to go in. But in the end Newbridge went ahead and  scored,  when a cross from the left wing, deflected into the path of Newbridge middlefielder Aaron Rogers and he volleyed the ball into the Clane net.

Clane went on the offensive and leveled the game with a great piece of individual skill from Sean Hannon, who headed the ball down to himself, let it bounce and then volleyed a shot from a very tight angle into the Newbridge net.

In the second half Newbridge went on the attach and only for some great defending from Cameron McCarty , Gavin Dowling and Aaron Behan, Newbridge could have got through several times.

Into the last quarter and the game got very exciting, both teams went for the win but it was Clane who finished the stronger.  Middlefielder for Clane Eoghan Maguire was mopping up all the Counter attacks from Newbridge and Jack Wright for Clane was opening up the Newbridge defense at will,  Clane had several attempts saved, from Jack Wright, Sean Hannon and Martin Callen . The Newbridge goalie Alpha Otuonye was having an outstanding game but finally Clane scored when Jack Wright went down the right side corner flag, turned inside and shot, the ball was saved, but it fell kindly to Sean Hannon who lifted it over the keeper and into the back of the net. Newbridge pressed hard for an equalizer but it was Clane who emerged victorious and overall deserved all 3 points.

Man of the Match was Eoghan Maguire who worked tirelessly as a defensive middlefielder and protected the Clane back two superbly.

Clane United triumph in ROI Supporters Cup Final
October 18th '09

Newbridge ROI Supporters Cup
Clane United 3 Caragh 1

Clane claimed the Republic of Ireland supporters club cup on a lovely Sunday afternoon after a three one victory over Caragh Celtic at Liffey Celtics grounds.

Clane began the game the strongest and dominated for long periods with Caragh struggling to get the ball past the half way line for long periods but they did manage to deal with the Clane attacks excellently. Rob Delaney and Jason Acton worked well in the centre of the field for Clane and combined they managed to test the Caragh defence on several occasions. In typical cup final fashion the first half was a very cautious affair and it wasn’t surprising that the first half ended at nil all.

Clane came out with all guns firing in the second half but some good defending and some excellent save from the Caragh goal keeper kept them at bay. Efforts from Clane’s Aaron Seery and Jordon Pedreschi were well dealt with by Caragh. Clane got the first goal of the game after a deflected clearance by the Caragh defence found their own net. Once they recovered Caragh pushed everything at Clane and had some very good efforts cleared by the Clane defence. As Clane defended deeper and deeper in the hope that the one goal would be enough Caragh capitalised on a rare defensive error by Clane to pull the game back level.

As time started to run out Clane in turn pushed everything forward and were rewarded with  their second fifteen minutes before the end when Alex McCann got onto the end of a well weighted cross by Jordon Pedreschi.  At this point Caragh had no choice to attack in an effort to find the equaliser but Alan Casey and Gary Hunt in the centre of the Clane defence were solid throughout. With 5 minutes left on the clock Clane’s Jordon Pedrecshi got Clanes third after Alex McCann took the ball around the Caragh defence to find Pedreschi running into space and Pedreschi tucked it away to finish off any chance of another comeback by Caragh.

Best for Clane were Alex McCann, Rob Delaney and Jason Acton.

6 unanswered goals for Edenderry Town.

Under 11 Premier Division
Clane United 0 Edenderry Town 6

Both teams started well in this U11 Premier league encounter on a beautiful sunny autumn morning on the Doctors road.

Early on Clane went close twice, first when Jason Devine broke away from the wing and only to see his shot hit the upright and a minute later Nathaniel Harris had a great chance when he was clear on goal only to shoot over the bar. With the sides even at 20 mins, Edenderry made the most of slack marking by Clane and found the net after 25 mins and just before half time they got a seconds.

After the break Clane made a few changes and conceeded a penalty which Edenderry failed to convert. However they made amends a few mins later and found the net 4 more times without reply. The scorers for the visitors were Ross Glynn (hat trick), Aran Kennedy, Josh McConnell and Jordan Flanagan.

Best for Clane on the day were the centre half Daire Claffey, left back Jack Cullen and Colm O'Sullivan. Best for Edenderry were Jack Foran and Jack Glennon.

Clane Under 10's undone at home to Kilcock.
October 17th '09

Under 10 Premier Division
Clane United 2 Kilcock Celtic 4

It was a Super day for football in Clane today and the first time this season that Clane and Kilcock met in the under 10 premier league.

Clane started well and could have scored in the opening minutes with some great play from Clane’s center forward  Jack Wright and his shot was saved on the line by the Kilcock keeper. Quick thinking by Kilcock’s goalie, with an early kickout down the wing lead to a great counter attach goal from Conor McNally.  The game was played at a frantic pace with both teams putting in last ditch tackles,  Cameron McCarty in the backs for Clane who was playing a superb game had to be taken off after 10 minutes with a heavy tackle to his ankle. Two minutes later Eoghan Maguire made a surging run into the Kilkock box  but was tackled just before he could shoot and he too got injured and had to be carried off the pitch. Clane regrouped and struck back minutes later with a well worked goal from middlefield,  Axel Power intercepted a Kilcock pass and passed the ball to Sean Hannon who placed a lovely weighted ball into the path of Jack Wright who buried the ball into the Kilcock’s net. Kilcock struck again with a great run down the wing by Oisin Proudfoot he dribbled past three Clane players and riffled the ball in the back of the net.

Clane now went on the offensive and played some great attaching play, Padraig Lally struck a shot from inside the box which beat the keeper but agonisingly went inches wide.   Second half and Clane were dominant in middlefield and made some great attacking moves but couldn’t deliver the final ball in to the striker and wasted several good chances. Kilcock scored again from a corner as they crossed in a nicely floated ball into the square and Finley Nirahn rose highest and headed the ball past to out rushing Clane keeper Daniel Reilly. Clane struck back with argueable the best goal of the game, great passing in the middlefield from Eoghan Maguire and Jack Wright opened up the Kilcock defense and the ball was slotted through to Sean Hannan who rounded the keeper and guided the ball into the empty net.

Clane pressed hard for an equalizer but this left big gaps in their defense and Kilcock were very good a exploiting this space, Clane defended well, Garrett Cleary and James Coonan had excellent games as full backs. But as Clane pushed everyone forward to try and level the game it was Kilcock who struck again with a lovely bit of individual skill by Daniel Goodwin to score Kilcock’s fourth goal.

Overall it was a very enjoyable game, both teams played their hearts out and the score did not reflect the number of changes created by both teams in the game.. Man of the Match was Sean Hannon for Clane..

Under 12's put 7 past Kynog.
October 17th '09

Under 12 Major Division 2
Clane United 7 Kynog United 2

This up and coming Clane team, who were bottom of their league last year, showed today in Clane that they're no walk over.

Clane had a brilliant start scoring twice in the first 15 minutes but it was not long before Kynog levelled the score at 2 all showing Clane they were in for a match. The first half then ended two all with both teams looking even in all areas.

After half time Clane came out full of energy and put real pressure on Kynog eventually putting another 5 goals past the Kynog defence. No matter how hard Kynogs defence worked they could not keep a determined Clane out proving they were too hungry for the win.

Goal scorer for Kynog United was Adam Lynch, who scored both goals.

Scorers for Clane were Philip Mylod, Cormac Judge, Dale Maguire, Ross Merriman (2), Donal Ennis and Killian Roberson.

Killian was named man of the match and it was well deserved. Also Andrew Watts, the Clane goalie, had another amazing game. Over all it was a great effort from both sides.

Under 8's go head to head.
October 11th '09

Under 8 Division 2
Clane United Red 0 Clane United Black 5

This was the “Red” team’s first match, playing against the slightly more experienced “Black” team.

This game was played in ideal conditions in Clane and the “Black” team got off to a good start with Fionn Murphy scoring two well taken goals in the first period.

In the second period the hard working David Garry tested the “Black” defence on several occasions without success and at half time, the Blacks were two up.

After Half time, the “Black” midfielders and forwards stepped up a gear and were rewarded with two fine goals scored by Adam Quinn and Sam Reilly netting from a wonderful shot from outside the box.

In the final Period the Reds tightened up their defence and with some brilliant goalkeeping from Eoin Twohig and defensive clearances by Daragh Fitzsimons, the Reds absorbed the pressure of the Blacks attacks.

Clane United second team brush Duncannon aside.

Leinster Junior Shield 1st Round
Duncannon FC 2 Clane United 5

Clane United made the long trip down to Duncannon in county Wexford for first round of the Leinster Junior Shield. Continuing on from their good form in both the league and cup Clane managed to notch up another very impressive victory.

The long journey appeared to have effected Clane as Duncannon started the strongest and managed to go one up within the first five minutes of the game. The goal came from a deflection in the Clane defence after a series of  poorly dealt with corners gifted the home side.

Clane bounced straight back and pulled the game level within ten minutes after a break down the left wing by Arron Seery resulted in a perfect cross to the waiting Dylan Heslin who rounded the keeper to slot the ball home for his and Clanes first of the afternoon. Clane began to turn the screw and enjoyed long spells of possession in the Duncannon half and only for some very solid defending they could have opened a substantial gap.

Dylan Heslin added his and Clane’s second with an almost identical cross and shot as his first. At this point Clane appeared to be cruising but once again a poorly defended corner kick gave Duncannon an equaliser totally against the play At two all with five minutes before half time the tie had the potential to go either way but once again up stepped Dylan Heslin this time he got onto the end of a half volley from the edge of the box and planted the ball into the back of the Duncannon net to make it three two to Clane and to give him a well deserved hat-trick.

The second half continued much as the first had ended with Clane dominating for long periods and the home team defending deeper and deeper. Jordon Pedreschi who had been involved in every attack and goal for Clane opened his account with a wonderfully worked goal ten minutes into the half which pretty much put an end to the home teams ambitions to get back into the tie. Mid way through the half Pedreschi added his second this time getting on to a cross from Aaron Seery. To their credit Duncannon continue to battle to the end but the Clane defence were in excellent form and it would have taken a lot to have broken them down.

Best for Clane, Dylan Heslin and Aaron Seery.

Late goals sink Clane under 11's
October 10th '09

Under 11 Premier
Clane United 1 Kilcock 4

The visitors were very strong from the off and they caught the Clane defence napping when Cian Farrell for Kilcock put the ball past Jamie Campbell in the Clane after a goal mouth scramble fifteen minutes into the first half. This very much set the tone for most of the first half with Clane struggling to keep the visitors at bay. Kilcock’s second came from a from a spot kick from Gary Farrell after he was judged to have been taken down in the box.

The second half saw a complete reversal with Clane taking the game to Kilcock from the whistle. Shane McCormack and Owen O' Loughlin were excellent in midfield and Sean O Brien was very strong in the Clane defence. Clane pulled one back from a penalty kick that was well converted by Ross Kinsella. Clane battled hard to get back into the game but as oftrn happens when teams push everything forward they leave themselves a little exposed in defence and Clane did this to their peril conceding the two late goals in quick succession from Darren Quinn and Cian Farrell.

Best for Clane, Sean O’Brien and for Kilcock Cian Farrell.

Edenderry to good for Clane.
October 10th '09

Under 10 Premier
Clane United 1 Edenderry Town 5

This game was due to be cancelled because of a waterlogged pitch in Edenderry but with the agreement of both teams, the game was reschedule to Clane, Doctors road.

It turned out to be a cracking game with both team getting stuck in straight away. Defenses for both teams were on top for the first quarter with superb play from Gareth Cleary and Cameroon McCarthy  for Clane, it took a superb solo effort by Cian Farrell, to break the deadlock. He skipped past four Clane players and with low left footed strike buried the ball in the Clane net.

Clane came back at Edenderry with great middlefield play from Padraig Lally, Jack Wright and Alex Power,  Clane has several chances at goal and the Edenderry Goalie Shane Cummins made some fine saves. But it was Edenderry who struck the net again, when a poorly cleared ball from the Clane box fell nicely to Darren Farrell and he volleyed the ball into the Clane net.

Clane kept pressing Edenderry and this pressure paid off when the Clane full forward Sean Hannon capitalized on a mistake by the Edenderry back line and rounded the on rushing keeper and slotted the ball inside to right post. Clane pressed for the equalizer and they nearly got it when Eoghan Maguire linked up well with the two Clane middlefielders  and riffled a slot just outside the upright. And so the half time whistle sounded and both team took a well deserved break.

Edenderry came out fighting and within minutes Darren Quinn went down the left turned inside and scored a looping shot into the top right corner.  They struck again from a free kick from just outside the box, when a cruel deflection wrong footed the Clane Goalie , Daniel Reilly and the ball diverted into the net. Clane had some great chances themselves when Eoghan Maguire found himself twice one on one with the keeper but the keeper stood up well and the danger was averted.  The game was wrapped up when Edenderry scored a lovely header from Darren Quinn from a corner kick and Edenderry went home with all three points.

Clane United 2nds still on the trophy trail.

Newbridge ROI Supporters Cup.
Bush Celtic 0 Clane United 2 (AET)

Following the disappointment of loosing out on the league by one point last week Clane continued their pursuit of silverware this time in the Newbridge Republic of Ireland Supports Cup away to Bush Celtic.

Clane started the game the most liveliest and if the early exchanges were anything to go by they appeared to be strolling to a comfortable win. The Clane centre midfield pairing of Rob Delaney and Jason Acton was very effective with the pair winning every ball that came their way. Bush managed to fend of all of the Clane advances to good effect. Jordon Pedreschi up front for Clane came close to opening the Clanes account but some excellent goalkeeping kept the sides level. The best chance of the first half fell to Clane’s Gary Hunt who narrowly missed heading the ball into the Bush goal from a perfectly delivered corner from Jason Acton.

The second half saw a reversal of roles with Bush taking the game to Clane. After having no corners in 45 minutes Bush had four in quick succession. Even though Bush were a physically bigger side Clanes centre half’s Gary Hunt and Sean Darcey dealt with the treat excellently.

As the half  progressed both teams battled hard to avoid the inevitable extra time and penalties. The result was twenty minutes of end to end action. By the time ninety minutes were up every piece of woodwork on both gaols had been hit. However normal time finished with the teams level at nil all.

For the second time in this cup competition Clane found themselves playing extra time and trying to get a result before the need for penalties. The first ten minutes continued as the second half had gone but in the second half of extra time Clane eventually broke the dead lock when Jason Acton buried a cross from Aaron Seary in to bottom of the Bush net. Bush reacted by pushing everything at Clane but the Clane defence stood strong and conceded nothing. In the final two minutes Clane were awarded a free from just inside the Bush half. The free was delivered straight into the box by Daryel Gibbons where it found the head of the advancing Jason Acton who glided it over the keeper and into the Bush net for his and Clan’s second.

Best for Clane Jason Acton and Gary Hunt

Slow start sees Edenderry bag 5.

Under 11 Premier.
Clane United 2 Edenderry Town 5

Clane will be disappointed for taking too long to get into this game. The visitors were very strong from the off and they caught the Clane defence napping when Shane Nolan for Edenderry put the ball past Harry Kelly in the Clane after a goal mouth scramble in the first two minutes of the game. This very much set the tone for most of the first half with Clane struggling to keep the visitors at bay. Edenderry’s second came from a Jack Robinson after a good run down the wing left him in space with only the keeper to beat which he did to good effect. Minutes later Robinson got his second and Edenderry’s third from a spot kick. Edenderry’s fourth came just before half time from Josh McConnell.

The second half saw a complete reversal with Clane taking the game to Edenderry from the whistle. Shane McCormack and Owen  O Loughlin were excellent in midfield and it wasn’t long before Mark Brien pulled one back for the home team. Even at four one Clane started to look like they could get back into the game and Ross Kinsela didn’t take to long to pull Clane even closer with a great individual goal to make it four two to the visitors.

As often happens when teams push everything forward they leave themselves a little exposed in defence and Clane did this to their peril conceding the fifth goal late in the second half when Edenderry’s Jack Robinson put the game out of reach with his third of the game.

Best for Clane, Sean O’Brien and for Edenderry Jack Robinson.
