Second team keep pressing at the top of Division 3.
September 27th '09

Hill Electrical Division 3.
Clane United 3 Grangecon 1

Clane where impressive from the start and had a number of very early attempts saved by  the Grangecon goalkeeper. Clane took the lead mid way through the first half after an impressive volley from well outside the box  by Jason Acton found the top corner. Clane continued to play some impressive football and went close with two long range efforts by Jordon Pedreschi Just before half time and very much against play  Grangecon managed to pull one back after a rare mistake in the Clane defence left them with little to do except slide the ball home. The first half ended one all but Clane looked very strong and were in control of the game.

The second half started much as the first had ended with Clane controlling the game. Clane continued to pile the pressure on and were denied on more occasions by some more sensational goalkeeping. Less then ten minutes into the second half Clane substitute Rob Delaney scored Clanes second again from a log range effort and this time the un-expecting keeper fumbled the ball into the net. Grangecon then started to brighten up as they knew they needed a goal to get back into the game but some more solid work in the Clane defence broke down any attacks. Clanes third came twenty minutes from the end when the ever reliable Jordon Pedreschi found the net. The game ended Clane 3 Grangecon 1.

Best for Clane Jason Acton, Rob Delaney

Under 13 Norton Cup.
Clane United 0 Firhouse 6

On a great day Clane made the long journey to play Arklow town in the cup.

Both teams went at it from the start but chances were few and far between. Arklow got what turned out to be the only goal of the game after 25 minutes when a long range free kick whent over the head of the clane keeper and into the net Arklow could not belive there luck. both teams tryed to break down each others defence but the score stayed the same.

Best for Clane were Robert Phillips ,Eoghan Kelly & Ronan Dunne.

Under 11 Menton Seery Cup.
Clane United 0 Firhouse 6

Firhouse began their cup campaign in impressive style on Saturday against Clane.  Firhouse took the lead after just 2 minutes when Sean nipped into score from close range after good work from Avis down the left.Sean notched up his 2nd goal halfway through the first half when he dived in front of the Clane keeper to head into the top of the net. Firhouse were denied another goal after a fine stop from the Clane keeper when Daniel shot from close range but a few minutes later Avis set off on his weekly left wing dribble and slotted the ball home for a fine 3rd goal. With the half coming to a close Daniel lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box to make it 4.

The 2nd half was again largely spent in the Clane half with a succession of chances well dealt with by the Clane keeper who had a great game despite the scoreline.halfway through the half kimolo cracked a shot from 20 yards which flew over the keepers head for number 5.The 6th was added 10 minutes later by Adam Donaldson who slotted home from the right wing. Some great work put in throughout the team notably from Marcus, Craig, Callum and Kimolo.

It was an impressive performance on what has to be said was an excellent pitch. We are traditionally slow starters to a season but not this year the guys are really playing well at the moment.

BBC take home the points from Doctors Road.

Under 10 Premier.
Clane United 0 BBC United 3

It was a great day for football in Clane today and we witnesses a superb game of football between two very talented teams.

Both teams started at a frantic pace and there were some great exchanges of passes and movement. But it was Clane United who got to grips with the game and came very close to scoring with a great close range shot by Padraig Lally, saved on the line by the BBC goalie Issac Ward and another shot by Sean Hannon which just missed the target by inches. BBC came back into the game with a couple of great chances which were saved by the Clane goalie Daniel Reilly. BBC pressed forward again but were caught on the counter attach when Eoghan Maguire ran the length of the pitch, sweeping past three BBC players and hit a low drive from inside the box but it was brilliantly saved by the BBC goalie.

The first half ended all square and the second half started with Clane United pressing hard for the opening goal, Alex Power and Jack Wright were dominant in Middlefield and only for some frantic defending by BBCs defence Clane would have got through on goal. But it was BBC who opened the scoring with a quick counter attach down the wing and a great finish from Carl Malone. Clane pressed for an equalizer but were caught again on the counter attach by a lovely move down the left and a perfectly placed ball into the square where Lee Sheehan slotted the ball home. Clane pressed hard for a goal and came very close twice, with a great header from Sean Hannon from a corner which went inches wide and Gareth Cleary came close from a free kick just outside the box.

BBC finished off the game with a superb long range short from the left touchline when Ashly Langan shot from 30 yard a high looping drive into the top corner of the net.  It was a really enjoyable game of football to watch, both teams were very well matched and I look forward to the next clash between these two excellent teams.

Clane Under 10's battle for a weel deserved victory.

Under 10 Major 1.
Clane United 3 Carragh Celtic 2

Clane gained a well deserved win at Doctors Rd.

The victory had been coming for the last couple of weeks with good performances leading up to todays victory. The intense heat brought a big crowd which did justice to both sets of players. Playing up a slight hill in the first half, Clane took the lead through a superbly taken strike from Martin Callan. Shortly afterwards Clane strook again through centre forward Sean Byrne. Carragh held out until half time despite more Clane chances from Gary Kelly and Emmet Malone.

The second half brought a well deserved goal by Ollie Chapman from Carragh. Clane were in fighting form and their determination led to a third goal by Sean Byrne who finished the day with a brace of goals. As well as the two goalscorers Clane can thank Cian McKenna, Aran Behan, Aaron Clarke, Daniel Mulqueen, Shane Meriman, Jarleth Dromgoole, Niall Little and Rhys McGrath for a well deserved win.

Clane advance in Menton Seery cup with 5 goals.

Under 11 Menton Seery Cup.
Clane United 5 Mill Celtic 0

Clane welcomed visitors Mill Celtic to Doctors road for the first round of the U11 Menton-Seery Cup. The game started out as a very lively encounter with both teams battling for domination. Early attempts from Mill Celtic were neatly dealt with by a strong and well organised Clane defence with both Caolan Smith and Daniel Hann standing out in the early exchanges. As Clane settled into the game Mill started to defend very deep. Clane’s Harry Kelly tormented Mill by managing to do everything in the box except score. The first goal came from Clane’s Shane McCormack after a log period of attacking from Clane opened up the Mill defence. Minutes later Connor McLoughlin got Clane’s second with a great one on one finish and Clane then began to dominate Owen O’ Loughlin, Mark Brien and Shane McCormack all worked well in the midfield to create chance after chance.

The second half continued much as the first half had ended. Although Mill had battled well they became a little exposed while trying to push forward in an effort to get something out of the game. Shane McCormack got his second and Clane’s third early in the half from a well worked exchange of excellent passes by Clane.

Harry McCann and Dylan McCarthy worked well in the Clane defence and made sure that nothing got past them adding further to Mills frustration. Clane’s fourth goal came from a well weighted through ball from Gary Feeney into the feet of Caolan Smith that was neatly tucked away by Smith. Gary Feeney continued to work some great balls through the Mill defence but the final a fifth goal came from a completely different approach. Clane’s corner kicker Tadgh Montgomery had been causing all sorts of difficulties with his delivery throughout the game but five minutes from the end he managed to score Clanes fifth and final goal directly from a corner with a slight help from a deflection. Late chances from Donal Martin were very unlucky not to have secured another goal for the home team.

Man of the Match for Clane was Shane McCormack

Hats off to Wright

Under 8 Division
Clane United 6 Caragh Celtic 1

Liam Wright's hat-trick helped the Clane boys to a well deserved victory at Doctors Road.

The visitors took an early lead through Lorcan Hogarty after a good move involving Owen Gallagher and Reily Hogarty who both had great games for Caragh. The second quarter saw Clane gain the upper hand. The introduction of Wright resulted in the centre forward firing home from close range to equalise for the home side.

Clane then quickly took the lead through Adam Quinn after a nice pass from Fionn Murphy. The visitors kept the home side at bay through some great saves by Zach Hayes who was matched in the Goalkeeping quality stakes by the Clane net minder Kian Cleary. Clane started the third quarter in great style with two goals. The first was driven home by Tom Haren after he was put through by Sean Connolly.

The second goal of the quarter and Clane's fourth was scored by Jack Malone after a great pass by Mark Kelly. Great defending by Colm Brien, Davy Hepple and Sam Reilly kept out any Caragh advances on the Clane goal. The fourth quarter saw Liam Wright seal his hatrick with two late goals, the pick of them was a superbly curled shot with the left foot that nestled into the top corner of the Caragh goal.

A great game that both sets of players can be proud of.

Sage Premier
Rathangan AFC 4 Clane United 1

This was a must win game for Rathangan ast hey tried to narrow the gap on Sage Premier League leaders Kilcullen AFC, with games running out. They started the day two points behind Fergal Finns side and also had a game more played.

Clane had the better of the early exchanges and they were rewarded for their early pressure when Darragh Deane and Ciaran Quinn conbined to send Alan Brennan in and the striker gave the home keeper Johnny Cassidy no chance with a well struck drive from the edge of the box. The home side gradually found their feet and they leveled six minutes later when a corner was won on the left. Eoin Kennedys inswinger caused consternation in the United defence and Paul Fulham managed to scramble the ball over the line, despite the best efforts of Clane keeper Paddy Walsh.

The home side took the lead in the thirty second minute when Johnny Carroll rose to meet a twenty five yard free and powered a header past the stranded Clane keeper. Clane tried to respond with Alan Brennan battling hard in midfield and Darragh Deane up front diving the home defence plenty to think about, while left full Daryl Gibbons was getting forward at every opportunity. Rahtangans crucial third came just before the break when Benny McMullan and Aidan Kelly combined well to set Richard Kelly free and the striker drew keeper Walsh before placing the ball in the bottom right corner of the Clane net.

A youthful Clane side tried to respond but the game was put to bed when the home side added their fourth through Richard Kelly with a strike from outside the area. The game was out of sight and Rathangan brought on fresh legs to shore up to see the game to the final whistle keeping the pressure on Kilcullen at the top of the league.

First local derby of season ends all square.

Under 11 Premier
Clane United Black 1 Clane United Red 1

A light mist welcomed the teams in this first exchange between the two Under 11 Clane United Premier teams. Both sets of players and supporters were excited at the prospect of the meeting each other so early in the season and by all accounts the game lived up to everyone’s expectations.

In the opening exchanges , there was little between the teams as each side settled down and got to grips with the full size pitch in what was the first competitive game for Clane united red team and the second for Clane United Black. The first real chance of the game came when Clane United Black attacked the Clane United Red goal and a cross from Nathaniel Harris found Peter Doyle unmarked who fired a brilliant shot to find the corner of the net and give Clane United Black the lead. Moments later Mark Brien ran down the wing with goal in his sights, however the Clane United Black defence ensured that the ball went wide. Late in the first half Nathaniel Harris had another shot on the Clane United Red goal only to find the side net and Mathew Murtagh later broke from centre midfield but was dispossessed just outside the box by the stubborn Clane United Red defence.

After some personnel changes on both sides at half time the game resumed and CU Red went on the attack immediately and from a short corner Ross Kinsella fired a shot which was deflected into the CU Black goal off a CU Black player for an own goal and there was nothing the impressive Clane United Black goalie Dillon Ryan could have done. Colm O’Sullivan continued to drive the CU Black team forward with impressive solid defending and in midfield Luke Hawkins pulled the strings to keep the Clane United black team in the match when tired legs became a factor.

Late on Mathew Murtagh went close when the ball squeezed under the Clane United Red goalie Jamie Campbell and but for a small tuft of grass at the goalpost the Clane United Black team would have been in front again. Birthday boy Harry McCann ran his socks off for Clane United Red up front and kept going till the final whistle.

It was impossible to pick a man of the match from this game as both sets of players had a tremendous game and everyone showed real heart and commitment throughout.

In the end all players and supporters went home satisfied with the result and looking forward to the season ahead.

Second team are convincing winners at Sallins.
September 13th '09

Division 3
Sallins Celtic 0 Clane United 3

Clane kept their league hopes alive with a convincing win away to close neighbours Sallins.

The first half saw two strong sides competing well for every ball but creating relatively few chances at either end. Clane chose to deliver long balls into the Sallins box but the physically bigger Sallins defence of Mick Robotham and Colum Keenan made easy work of defending the advances.  Sallins’s Niall Herbert caused some early concerns for Clane but as with Clane no clear chances were created by Sallins. The two closest efforts of the half fell to Rob Sharpe and Jordon Pedreschi of Clane but Shane Herbert in the Sallins Goal pulled of a string of excellent saves denying Clane a lead going into the break.

Clane came out in the second and began to dominate in many areas of the pitch and went close on a number of occasions with the best of the early chances falling to the head of Alan Casey who put the ball wide by the width of the post.

Clane’s most prolific striker of the season Jordon Pedreschi opened the scoring fifteen minutes into the half when a well worked move down the field found him in space out on the wide left, he rounded the only remaining defender and buried the ball into the top corner of the Sallins net .Minutes later Clane’s  Ray Kelly was taken down in a crowded Sallin’s box and Clane were awarded a penalty. This was neatly tucked away by Jason Acton to put Clane two nil up with twenty minutes remaining.

Sallins did all they could to try and get themselves back into the game but where unable to get past what was a very solid Clane defence. Clane were forced to defend multiple corner kicks from Sallins in the last fifteen minutes as they threw everything forward in an effort to get something out of the tie. To Clanes credit they kept focused on the challenge and in turn they created a host of excellent chances on the break. The best of these resulted in the third goal of the game five minutes from the end. A Long clearance by Warren Beal beat the offside and was perfectly chased down by the sprinting Arron Searey who unselfishly took one touch and put the ball past the retreating defender onto the foot of the advancing Jordon Pedreschi for his second of the game and Clanes third.

Clane United Under 8 hit Newbridge for six.
September 13th '09

Under 8 Premier
Clane United 6 Newbridge White 3

This was a welcome start to the new season, the sun was shining and the game was played in Great Spirit and was entertaining to both sets of supporters.

In the first period both teams had good exchanges with Clane getting the upper hand through a well worked goal scored by Jack Malone. Clane put more pressure on the Newbridge defence and when Sean Connolly was fouled on the edge of the box he converted the resultant free kick.

Sam Reilly put Clane 3 in front with a well taken goal in the second period. Newbridge made some changes to the formations and this paid off with Luke O’Brien capitalising on a keeper error to reduce the deficit.

In the third period Clane restored the two goal advantage with a well taken goal by Liam Wright. Newbridge got back in the match with Donal Conroy scoring a fine goal to make the score 4 – 2.

Both teams made their changes for the final period and played some lovely football. Clane’s Sean Connolly and Sam Reilly combined well to score a goal each leaving Newbridge a mountain to climb but they kept chipping away at Clane and were rewarded with a goal from Sean Byrne.

Season opener off to a flyer for Clane U16's
September 12th '09

Under 16 Premier
Clane United 3 Athy Town 0

Clane United got their season off to a winning start in the blazing sunshine today, which brought the spectators out in force.

The first half saw two strong sides competing well for every ball but creating relatively few chances at either end.  Athy choose to deliver long balls into the Clane box but the physically stronger Clane defence of Stephen Corrigan, Jordan Thompson, Shane Ryan and Danny Boyle made easy work of defending the advances.  The closest effort of the first half fell to Clane’s Killian Patchell who saw a powerful short from 20 yards hit the crossbar and go over denying Clane the lead going into the break.

Clane came out in the second half with a slight change in the formation and began to dominate in many areas of the pitch and went close on a number of occasions.  Ten minutes into the second half Killian Patchell sent in a long corner to the back post which was met by the head of Karl Cleary flying through the air only to see his brilliant shot cannon off the upright but like all good forwards, Connaire Black was there waiting to finish and put Clane into a deserved lead.

Athy were next on the attack and this came from a long ball from Dylan Kelly at right back which landed perfectly for Nathan Robertson to have a shot on goal. Clane’s keeper Peter Hogarty got up well to force the ball over for a corner.

Another corner from Killian Patchell, short this time, to the left foot of Danny Boyle, who delivered a perfect ball to Clane’s most prolific striker, Dylan Hannon, who made no mistake about putting Clane two up.

Clane were forced to defend a couple of corner kicks from Athy put again their net minder proved his worth.  The Clane team remained totally focused on the challenge and in turn they created a host of excellent chances on the break.  Luke Allen looked very promising on left midfield, picking up the ball and running at the Athy defence.

It was Hannon again who sealed the win for Clane when Karl Cleary put through a glancing header past the Athy defence and Hannon slotted home his second goal of the game.

The Referee had a great game with total control over all proceedings and neither team gave him any trouble in this very sporting contest which is always a pleasure to be part of.

Clane started the season on a high with a winning start at Doctors Rd. The intense heat brought a big crowd which did justice to both sets of players.

Playing up a slight hill in the first half, Clane took the lead through a superbly taken strike from Jack Wright.
Shortly afterwards Clane struck again through centre forward Sean Hannon. Sallins held out until half time after some great saves by Austin Conway.

The second half brought a well deserved goal by Jordan Duffy from Sallins, who also had Killian Murphy and Aaron Eathon on top form. As well as the two goalscorers Clane can thank Gavin Dowling, Padraig Lally, Garreth Cleary, James Coonan and Cameron McCarthy for a well deserved win.

Clane progress after extra time.

Newbridge Republin of Ireland supporters Club Cup
Carbury SC 4 Clane United 5

What started out to be a very interesting fixture between two teams challenging for their respective Division 3 and 4 titles did not disappoint. The brave spectators that turned out on what was a very wet and windy morning witnessed what can best be described as a rollercoaster from start to finish.

Although Carbury started the game strongest and Clane struggled to get the ball past the half way line Clane still managed to take the lead fifteen minutes in when a long ball through to Rob Delaney left him with one defender and the keeper to beat which he did to great effect tucking the ball into the bottom left corner. On the half hour Carbury won a corner which was well delivered into the Clane box. A poor clearance from Clane found  Carburys Ian Dunne free at the edge of the box and with a perfect strike he buried the ball into the Clane goal. Clane began to find their form and played some excellent football down both wings and they were unlucky not to take the lead again before half time. In what was almost an exact replicate of the first goal Carbury scored again five minutes before half time once again from a corner and once again a strike by Ian Dunne from the edge of the box.

Clane came out with all guns firing in the second half but some good defending and some excellent save from Paddy McNamara in the Carbury goal kept the visitors at bay. Efforts from Clane’s Rob Delaney and Jordon Pedreschi were lucked off the line. As time began to run out Clane pushed everything forward and were rewarded with an equaliser with only 3 minutes left on the clock when a scrappy clearance from a corner was neatly finished  off by Arron Seary to bring the game into extra time.

As if this wasn’t enough extra time saw a further 5 goals the first from Clane’s Alan Casey when he beat the keeper in a one to one. Once again the next goal came from Clane this time Jason Acton finished off a great cross into the box from Ray Kelly. Clane clearly expected that their opponents would lie down and accept defeat but to Carbury credit they fought back and scored themselves before half time in extra time.

Still evenly balance and with fifteen minutes of extra time to play Carbury pushed everything into the Clane half and again the found the net from a set piece. This time a badly defended free kick was converted Jason Mooney. With 5 minutes left on the clock Clane won a free kick on the edge of the box, Jordon Pedrecshi stepped up and hit the ball straight towards the top right corner, the keeper was well beaten when Ray Kelly took the final touch to find the net. The arguments about who gets credit for the winning goal will continue for a long time.

Man of the match Jordon Pedreschi
