Newbridge Town kept up their pursuit of under 14 league title honours with a comfortable if slightly flattering win over Clane last Saturday morning. It was slightly flattering because Newbridge weren't three goals better than Clane like the scoreline would suggest but there is no doubting that the best team on the day won.
Kevin McNally was always a threat on the left wing while Peter Cunningham bossed the centre of midfield in a way that meant Newbridge were always on top of the game. Newbridge were also much more clinical in front of goal than their hosts because there is no doubt that Clane created a number of chances but while they all went a begging the visitors were able to find the net no less than three times.
Clane had the first chance of the game when a miss kick by Newbridge skipper Daryl Phillips fell to Dean Callan only for him to screw his shot wide of the post. Phillips, relieved of the let off from his mistake then rose at the back post to get on the end of a corner putting newbridge 1 up.
Clane started the second half much the better but Dylan Hannon couldn't quite force the ball home after Killian McNamara had missed Callans cross and Hannons long range free kick brought about an unorthodox save from McNamara. Danny Boyle then headed wide after a Callan corner in the 47th minute and within a minute Newbridge had doubled their lead through Cunningham. The midfielder picked up a deserved goal after he picked the ball up in midfield and curled a shot past Hogarty.
Patrick Punar came on and the game was swinging further in Newbridge towns favour with Punar unlucky not to get on the scoresheet after some infectous running. Daragh McHugh rounded off the scoring when he lifted the ball over Hogarty from a Cunningham pass.
