March 28th '09

Under 7
Bush Celtic 2 Clane United U7 4

It was a tough game in Cut Bush on Saturday with the two undefeated teams providing an entertaining and exhilarating game for all.

The game was end to end with Mark Kelly getting the opening goal for Clane in the first period.

In the second period Bush applied more pressure and the defence held out and thanks to a brilliant double save by Cian Cleary to keep Clane in front.

In the  third period the action was still at a fast pace and Bush Celtic scored the equaliser after alot of pressure and through some good play.

In period  fourth period Bush scored early on to take the lead. Clane increased the pressure on their defence and Adam Quinn forced in the ball to put Clane back on level terms. With three minutes to go Clane continued to attack and Liam Wright scored the third and Adam Quinn putting the game beyond Bush to end this exciting game.

Under 10's beaten by Kilcullen

Under 10 Premier
Clane United U10 2 Kilcullen AFC 3

Doctor’s Road, Clane was the venue for this U10 Premier match. Conditions were good with a cold breeze across the pitch. Clane’s captain, Colm O’Sullivan, opted to take the tip-off. Watched by a small attendance, the home team got off to a flying start. After just four minutes, Clane were on the attack and won a corner kick. Brian Corbett flighted the perfect ball which found Tadgh Montgomery un-marked in the six yard box. Tadgh headed to the back of the net to put Clane one ahead. Both teams settled well but it was the home side who applied the early pressure on the Kilcullen defence. Michael O’Brien and Orin Stanley gave a strong performance for the visitors and prevented the Clane forwards from having a shot on target.

Ten minutes into the half Kilcullen’s Harry Pembroke caught the Clane defence off guard and put Naseem Afobali through for the first of two goals. Naseem blasted low and hard to the corner of the net. Five minutes later he scored his second with a similar strike on target. Kilcullen were now on-top of their game and led 2-1 at the interval.

Play resumed with the introduction of Adam Donovan, Owen O’Loughlin and Nathanial Harris for the home side. With most of the action happening in the middle of the park, both teams were giving it their all. Colm O’Sullivan and Adam Donovan gave a brave performance in the Clane defence. However, it was Cian Creaon who reacted quickest to a long ball that seemed to be going wide. With hesitation from the Clane players, Cian had a snap shot across the goal which ended up in the net after a deflection. Kilcullen were now two ahead.

This seemed to spur the home side on and a pass from Brian McLoughlin into the box saw Owen O’Loughlin taken down and Clane awarded a penalty. Ross Kinsella duly slotted to the right of the keeper to leave one goal between the sides. This was now going to be a tense finish with Kilcullen playing the better football and Clane looking to equalise. Try as they did, Clane could not breach a strong Kilcullen defence.

The match ended 3-2 with a win to the visitors. Best for Kilcullen, Naseem Afobali, Cian Creaon and Orin Stanley in defence. Best for Clane, Colm O’Sullivan, Adam Donovan and Brian McLoughlin.

Clane United U11p 2 Arlington AFC 2

Clane and Arlington played out a well deserved share of the spoils at Doctors road , Clane.

Both teams started at a very high tempo and it was Clane who opened the scoring when a well taken shot by Philip Mylod beat the Arlington goalkeeper. Some good play by Clane's Eoghan Kelly and Kyle Devey stopped Arlington in their tracks but Clane were hit by a double blow just before half time when Arlington scored two goals in two minutes.

The second half started with the breeze at Clane's back and it enabled Clane to push for an equalizer. They were rewarded when Jack McCreevey scored directly from a corner to make it 2 - 2. The game finished 2 all with neither team able to net a winner.

Under 9 Major 1
Clane United U9m1 2 Prosperous FC 3

A great game of soccer witnessed at Doctors Road between two resilient teams. Clane played with a lot of purpose in the opening half and were aided by a strong wind.

However, Prosperous absorbed the opening pressure and rallied to score three excellent goals without reply, Liam Kennedy (2) and Andrew Halley (1), finishing good moves for Prosperous in the later stages of the first half.

From the start of the second half, Clane lifted their game and within a couple of minutes had Prosperous shell shocked by two outstanding goals, first Martin Callan followed shortly by Sean Byrne much to the delight of the home crowd.

The remaining 15 minutes brought out the best in both teams, particularly the home team who went in search of the equalizer.

However, despite gallant displays for Clane by Martin Callan, Gavin Dowling and Cameron McCarthy, Prosperous held on to score a hard fought win, helped by good displays by
David O’Neill, Aaron Fitzgerald and Joseph Ennis.

Clane win out in 6 goal thriller

Under 9 Premier
Clane United U9p 4 Newbridge Town 2

One of the best games of the season and surely some future premier league players were  what was on show at Doctors Road.

Clane took to the field intent on turning the tables on Newbridge after a defeat to them earlier in the season. Early Clane pressure paid off when a superbly taken shot from centre forward Sean Hannon rattled the back of the visitors net. The midfield battle saw Newbridge's Elliot Nolan pit his witts against the ever strong Sean Callan and his midfield partner Eoghan Maguire, who all had outstanding games. It wasn't long before Clane struck their second through a great shot fron Sean Callan after some good work by Eoghan Maguire on the wing.

Mid way through the first period Newbridge mounted a number of attacks on the Clane goal through their forwards Ben O'Dowd and Conor McHugh. These advances on goal were well controlled by the Clane defenders Gareth Cleary and Sam McCormack, who both had outstanding games for the home side.

Clane got the better of the early exchanges in the second half with strong running from James Behan and Alex Power causing Newbridge early problems. Five minutes into the second half saw Clane strike a third goal with a superb shot from outside the box by midfielder Jack Wright. A great save by Clane's keeper Daniel Reilly and strong defending by Newbridge's Stephen Brennan stopped more goals from going in.

At three nil, all Clane's hard work and running saw them tire and as a result allowed Ben O'Dowd in for Newbridge and gave the visitors some hope. That hope was all but put to bed in the last ten minutes when another superbly taken goal by Sean Callan put the homeside 4 -1 up heading into the last few minutes. A late goal by Conor McHugh for Newbridge finished the scoring on a day that both teams can be very proud of.

Another hat-trick for Montgommery as Clane win by 4.

Under 10 Premier
Clane United U10p 4 Kill Celtic 0

On a damp foggy morning at Doctor’s Road, Clane’s captain, Tadgh Montgomery, opted to take the tip-off. The home team started well and were playing in a very determined manner. It only took four minutes of play when Brian McLoughlin played a timely ball to the feet of Tadgh Montgomery in the Clane forwards. Clane’s captain had only in thing in his mind and made no mistake with a fine strike to the back of the net.

The visitors reacted well but Clane’s mid-field of Daniel Hahn and Brian Corbett were on top form. Corbett went on a run right through the Kill defence and a well struck shot put the home team two up. Killian Armstrong was a constant threat for Kill and it was good goal-keeping from Caolan Smith combined with excellent defending by Adam Donovan and Colm O’Sullivan that prevented Kill getting on the score sheet. Twelve minutes into the half Daniel Hahn split the Kill defence with a very skilful pass and once again Tadgh obliged with a super finish to leave the home team three ahead. Moments later Kyle Hussy was one on one with the Kill keeper and looked certain to score but Glen Brennan dived to save at his feet. Brennan was the busiest of the two keepers and before the half ended hardworking Brian McLoughlin with some excellent ball control slipped a pass to Tadgh Montgomery who blasted the ball under the bar for a well earned hat-trick to leave the score at the interval 4-0 to the home side.

The half time talk by the Kill managers seemed to pay dividends as they were a different team in the second period. Clane’s substitutes, Natanial Harris and Ross Kinsella combined well in the mid-field and were determined not to let the visitors score. Despite Kill’s efforts they were unlucky not to net at least twice. This was a very competitive game which the score-line doesn’t really reflect. Best for Kill was Killian Armstrong and Chris Flood in defence and for Clane, Tadgh Montgomery, Brian McLoughlin, Nathanial Harris and Colm O’Sullivan.

Under 10 Major
Clane United U10m 3 Kynog United 2

When the fog lifted for this mid day local derby , the clane lads were quick off the mark and dominated the openings minutes with some great passing play. Within 5 mins Clane took the lead through a great goal from Luke Hawkins who side footed the ball into the net after a run from midfield . After the game settled down Kynog found their way into the game and managed an equaliser from an error by the Clane goalie who otherwise had a great game. Clane regrouped and after some slick passing Jamie Campbell found the net with a neat tap-in to make it 2-1. Eoin Donnelly had 2 chances for the visitors and Mathew Murtagh then had a great shot saved for Clane. Shortly after his entrance Jack Cullen received the ball deep in the Clane half and ran the length of the pitch only to see his final effort go off a defender for a corner. Dylan McCarthy (Captain) kept the Clane defence well organised throughout.

After the restart , Clane continued as they had finished the first half and once again Luke Hawkins found the net after receiving the ball and then smashing the ball into the net . The Clane forward Peter Doyle was unlucky not to score when he was left unmarked but saw his shot go over the bar and he made an important contribution up front throughout with some good passing and held the ball up well for the on coming attackers, Clane had a number of other chances in the second half and but for the superb goal keeping by Johnny Byrne in the Kynog goal they would have finished the game as a contest much sooner. As it was Kynog came back into it with a goal from Anthony Farrell.and some great running by Conor Brady., PJ O’Neill and Keith Donohue. Clane dug deep after a number of changes and deservedly won the game.

Montgommery bags 4 in comfortable win.

Under 10 Premier
Edenderry 1 Clane United U10p 5

Clane United travelled to Edenderry Town for the first time this season. Conditions were damp but spirits were high. Clane’s Captain, Brian Corbett, won the toss and opted to take the tip-off.

The early exchanges saw United with a lot of possession in the middle of the field. The opening goal was scored in the fifth minute of play when Daniel Hahn put a long ball down the right side which was kicked out of play for a corner kick. Adam Donovan delivered the perfect corner into the six yard box to the head of Brian McLoughlin who made no mistake to leave Clane 1 up. Edenderry responded four minutes later to even the score, when a mix-up in the Clane defence left an easy tap-in for the home side. Clane then seemed to up the tempo and with plenty of shots on target. Clane’s full-forward, Tadgh Montgomery, was certainly on form and added two more goals to leave the score 3-1 to Clane at the interval.

The second half started with Edenderry chasing the game but their chances of scoring were few and far between. It was going to be Clane’s day because of a strong combination of dominant play from Brian Corbett and Owen O’Loughlin who linked up effortlessly with Kyle Hussey, Brian McLoughlin and Tadgh Montomery in the forwards. It seemed that Tadgh could do no wrong and with a good supply of ball he scored two more goals to leave his tally at four for the day.

Clane still pressed forward and chances fell to the boot of Kyle Hussey but were narrowly missed. Overall this was a great team performance from Clane United with man of the match going to Tadgh Montgomery. Clane went on to win the game 5-1.

Dalton does it. March 7th '09

Under 10 Major
Clane United U10m 0 Sallins 1

A brilliant cross by Jack Cullen in the tenth minute was the first sign that Clane Utd were really up for this local derby match against Sallins. Luckily for Sallins, none of the Clane lads could finish when a simple tap in would have put the home side one up. However, it was Sallins who scored after 14 minutes when Conor Dalton raced through the Clane defensive line and finished clinically with a nice shot on goal.

On the restart Sallins almost went two up when the Clane boys were saved by the post. But 10 minutes into the game and Matthew Murtagh drove a powerful shot into the Sallin’s box that narrowly went over the top.

Clane pressed for the equaliser and it almost came after 15 minutes when Jamie Campbell put through a fantastic ball into Matthew Murtagh who yet again, came very close to scoring that elusive goal. Sallins, however, had their chances too and if it wasn’t for some excellent saves by Conor Mc Loughlin in goal and determined defensive work by Jason Devine and Dylan McCarthy, Sallins might have gone further ahead.

Clane, who fought bravely to a man,  made one final push with another superb through-ball by Campbell into the feet of Cullen who brought out the best in the Sallin’s keeper with a fine save.
It ended 1-0 to the visitors but the home side delivered what was probably their best performance of the season so far to very appreciative and vocal supporters. Best for Sallins was Conor Dalton while the Clane stars included Conor McLoughlin, Jack Cullen, Jamie Campbell and Matthew Murtagh.

Under 14 CUP
Clane United U14p 2 Kilcullen 1

An excellent game of soccer took place at Doctors Road today between these two teams. Although the weather conditions were not favourable both teams managed to put on a spectacular display for the spectators and from the comments afterwards they enjoyed every minute of the game.

Clane went into this game determined to take the game to Kilcullen and for the first 20 minutes they were relentless in their attack on goal and were unlucky not to be 3 goals up. Dean Callan was taken down in the box twice and both looked like fair penalties denied and Killian Patchell’s shot just went wide of the post.

As is normal, Kilcullen settled after 20 minutes and started to thread through some nice passes. Ben Merrins got on the end of one and had a clear shot on goal, but Clane’s net minder Peter Hogarty produced a spectacular save to keep the score level at half time.

The second half commenced and it took some minutes to get the memento of the first half going again but both sides got into their stride. End to end football was the order of the day and with both midfield playing some excellent football with Killian Patchell, Shane Ryan, Andy Power and Stephen Byrne playing with superb confidence, just shading the possession in Clane’s favour. With 50 minutes played Dean Callan had a shot on goal cleared off the line and the clearance fell to the feet of Clanes’ captain Stephen Byrne, who drove the ball low and hard past the Kilcullen keeper to deservedly put Clane on top.

Clane then seemed to up the tempo, if that’s possible in a game like this and Dylan Hannon and Dean Callan were proving too much for the Kilcullen defence and Callan was taken down and was awarded a free kick 25 yards out. Callan himself took the free and scored a spectacular goal into the top corner, which gave the Kilcullen keeper no chance.

Kilcullen fought back and were rewarded with a corner 5 minutes to go and the wind took the ball to Ben Merrins who scored Kilcullens first. It was Kilcullen then who went hell for leather looking for the equaliser to take this game to extra time, but the entire Clane team who had a GAA match after the game, got behind the ball to ensure no extra time was played. Clane came out worthy winners on the day with a superb team performance but great credit goes to both teams for the entertainment they provided in a great sporting manner.

A grueling and driven performance was on display at doctors road on Saturday where the Clane defenders were mostly on the back foot with keeper, Sean Byrne, pulling off a number of saves to keep Rathangan at bay dring the first half.

Best for Clane were Martin Callan, Niall Little and Emmet Malone.  Best for Rathangan were Joe Breen, Aaron Jameson and Daniel Allen. A thoroughly enjoyable match for both players and spectators. Well done to both teams.

Under 9 Premier
Clane United U9p 3 Athgarvan 0

Both sides made the best of some tricky conditions as the wind swept through the Clane pitch.

After early pressure from Clane, the visitors from Athgarvan settled into the game and great deffending from Ros Fallon kept the Clane side at bay.
Mid way through the first period Clane mounted a number of attacks on the Athgarvan goal through good forward running from their midfield. These advances on goal were well controlled by the two Athgarvan midfielders JB Murphy and Fergal O'Mahoney, who both had outstanding games for the away side. The midfield battle was won by Clane Utd's Sean Callan and Eoghan Maguire who scored the first Clane goal on ten minutes after some great one two passing from him and Jack Wright. Clane went to the break one nil up and deservedly so.

Clane got the better of the early exchanges in the second half with strong running from Sean Hannon, Mark Doyle, Sean Callan and Padraig Lally causing Athgarvan early problems.
If it wasn't for great deffending from Gareth Cleary and Sam McCormack the visitors may have equalised. With ten minutes remaining Clane scored their second from a corner played in by Sean Callan that was met at the far post by Sam McCormack who calmly slotted home..Clane wrapped up the scoring with their third, scored by Eoghan Maguire after he split the Athgarvan defence to drive the ball home. A late chance by Athgarvan was calmly collected by Clane keeper Daniel Reilly .His resulting kick out was followed by the final whistle and a loud chear as the home side recorded a well desrved victory.Credit to both teams for the manner in which they conducted themselves.

Under 11s edge narrow win March 7th '09

Under 11 Premier
Clane United U11p 2 Kilcullen 1

Clane came out winners in a tightly fought game at Doctors road.

Kilcullen started the game with the breeze at their backs and put Clane under pressure but could not find an opening through some good defending by Kyle Devey. Clane battled hard through out the half and were unlucky to concede a goal with the last kick of the ball in the half.

The second half was mostly Clane and they got the equalizer they deserved with a fine shot from the edge of the box from Cormac Palmer. Clane pressed for a winner and found the net half way through the second half when Robbie Hyland broke free and calmly put the ball in the onion sack. Clane held out for their win and came away with the three points.

Best for Clane were Kyle Devey and Robbie Hyland.
